ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike

By Saminu Sani, Abuja

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU has embarked on indefinite strike over what it describes as poor funding of Universities.

The Union, led by its National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi directed university lecturers to begin indefinite strike at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA last night.

ASUU said failure of the state and Federal Government to implement agreements and enforced a different Memorandum of Understanding as clear pathway to addressing the rot in the system, have been responsible for low standard of university education in Nigeria.

Lamenting over the issue, he said that the education sector is a specific case of public provisioning that has been abandoned in the last twenty years.

ASUU said it has run out of patience with Government’s unpreparedness to address the challenges facing the university system.

The union also said that the strike will be total and indefinite, and directed all its members in public universities to withdraw their services immediately, until government fully implements all outstanding issues as contained in the 2017 MoU
