One of the lawyers to Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Barrister Haruna Magashi told newsmen after the case today that the court has dismissed the bail application for the Sheikh and his wife Malam Zeenat who are being charged for murder, culpable homicide and unlawful assembly among others.
Addressing newsmen outside the court premises after the case, as they were not allowed into the court, he added that the judge ordered that a speedy hearing will be done however.
He explained that the preceding judge of the Kaduna High court, Justice Gideon Kurada said he is going to continue with the case even in the absence of the third and the forth accused as there were no records before him showing that they have received any summons from the court.
Speaking on the reaction of the accused persons, he further said that the team will study the court’s decision dismissing the bail application with the Sheikh to determine what step to take next.
In his response Barrister Dari Bayero, the counsel to the state government, said the Sheikh has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and the court has asked them to bring their evidences to prove the charges against him.
In a swift reaction to the refusal of the court to grant bail to the Sheikh, Mr. Ibrahim Musa, President Media Forum of the Islamic Movement said, “We are disappointed with the courts’ decision, because it should have considered his failing health.
“Secondly it shows that the government is not ready to listen to us, well-meaning Nigerians as well as the international community that our leader should be set free as ordered by the Federal High Court.
“Therefore we will keep on with our protests in Abuja and other cities Insha Allah.”
The court announced January 22nd 2019 as the date for the next sitting.
