Young Lawyers under the Nigerian Bar Association NBA have awarded the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Kano Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim with an award of excellence.
The lawyers described the NUJ chairman who has been a judicial and crime reporter throughout his practice as a committed and exemplary journalist who has adapted to the ethics of the journalism profession.
The award took place during during the Young Lawyers seminar with the theme “Professionalism and building a legal career in the legal practitioner” on Thursday in Kano.
The award was received on behalf of the Kano NUJ chairman by a colleague Isyaku Ahmad of the Voice America who said the awardee is very delighted to have been recognised by the professional body.
Delivering an address at the occasion, a leading legal practitioner, who also received an award, Prince Abdullateef Fagbemi SAN, called on the young practitioners to keep their hands clean and abide strictly by the ethics of the practice.
“Sustenance in the legal practice for the young lawyers depends on how clean their hands are by avoiding embezzling clients’ money” he said.
He advised them to work under senior practitioners to acquire the necessary experience and skills. He also encouraged them to start by becoming pro bono lawyers as a way of gaining experience.
Speaking to newsmen, the state chairman of the NBA, Mr M.A Lawan said the seminar was organized to give a direction to the young lawyers to have mentors and intimate them on how to charge the professional fees.
He advised the lawyers to utilize the opportunity and the knowledge they acquire in the seminar for their betterment.
